Mulch, Pine Straw, and Wood Chips: Which Is Right for Your Beds?
We supply and install all three, and each has its strengths.
| Material | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Pine straw | Sloped beds and a classic Southern look | The needles interlock, so they stay in place and do not wash away easily. |
| Mulch (shredded hardwood or bark) | Beds where you want a rich, finished look | Shredded hardwood holds its thickness longer than pine straw, and bark breaks down more slowly still. |
| Wood chips | Large areas and around trees | A natural option that conserves moisture and helps suppress weeds. |
Not sure which one fits your beds? Tell us about them when you request an estimate, and we will recommend one.
Why Mulch Your Flowerbeds?
Mulch does more than make beds look neat. A good layer:
- Conserves soil moisture, so plants dry out more slowly
- Reduces weeds, because fewer weed seeds sprout
- Keeps soil temperatures steadier and lessens cold damage
- Slows erosion and keeps soil from splashing onto leaves
- Protects trunks and stems from string trimmers
- Gives beds a neat, finished look with contrast against your plants

How Much Mulch Do Your Beds Need?
More is not better. The right depth protects your plants, and too much can hurt them. This is the depth we recommend:
| Where | Recommended depth |
|---|---|
| Annual flowers and perennials | About 1 inch |
| Shrubs | About 2 inches |
| Trees | 3 to 4 inches |
Most beds do well with 2 to 3 inches overall, and mulch deeper than 4 inches is unhealthy for most landscape plants.
Spread mulch outward over the bed, not piled up against trunks and stems. Mounds against a trunk, often called “mulch volcanoes,” trap moisture and can lead to rot.
Keep mulch 2 to 3 inches away from tree trunks and shrub stems, and 6 to 12 inches away from your foundation.
If 2 to 3 inches of mulch is already in place, you do not need to add more.
When to Mulch in Shreveport
Fall is a great time to add new mulch and refresh older beds. Organic mulch breaks down over time, so most beds need weeding and topping up once or twice a year to stay at the right depth. You do not have to remove old mulch first: a fresh layer can go right on top as long as the total depth stays in range, and matted mulch can simply be raked loose.

What Affects the Price of Mulch and Pine Straw Installation
Every property is different, so we price each job individually. These are the main factors:
- Bed size: More area takes more material and more time.
- Material: The material you choose affects the cost.
- Depth: Fresh beds need more than beds that are only being topped up.
- Condition of the beds: Weedy or overgrown beds take extra prep before new material goes down.
- Access: Gates, slopes, and distance from where material is delivered.

FAQ
Mulch and Pine Straw Questions
What is the difference between mulch and pine straw?
Pine straw is made of fallen pine needles, which interlock and stay put on slopes. Mulch is usually shredded hardwood or bark, which holds its thickness longer than pine straw. Both protect plants and suppress weeds, and we supply and install both.
Which is better for Shreveport flowerbeds, mulch or pine straw?
Both work well. Pine straw is a favorite for sloped beds and a classic Southern look, while shredded hardwood keeps its thickness longer. The best choice depends on your beds and your style. Tell us about your landscape when you request an estimate, and we will recommend one.
How deep should mulch be?
Most beds do well with 2 to 3 inches. For more precision, we recommend about 1 inch around annual flowers and perennials, about 2 inches around shrubs, and 3 to 4 inches around trees. Mulch deeper than 4 inches is unhealthy for most landscape plants.
How often should I replace mulch or pine straw?
Most beds need weeding and topping up once or twice a year to stay at the right depth. Fall is a great time to add fresh material. You do not need to remove the old layer first, as long as the total depth stays in range.
Do I need to remove old mulch before adding new?
No. A fresh layer can go right on top of old mulch, as long as the total depth stays in the recommended range. If the old mulch has matted down, it can be raked loose first. We will check your beds when we estimate the job.
Is it okay to pile mulch around tree trunks?
No. Mulch piled against a trunk, often called a mulch volcano, holds moisture against the bark and can lead to rot. Spread mulch outward instead, and keep it 2 to 3 inches away from trunks and stems.
Do you offer flowerbed maintenance contracts?
Yes. We offer maintenance contracts for ongoing flowerbed care, including weeding, shrub trimming, perennial and crepe myrtle pruning, and fresh mulch or pine straw. Tell us about your property when you request an estimate, and we will build a plan.
Do you supply the mulch and pine straw?
Yes. We supply and install mulch, pine straw, and wood chips, so there is nothing for you to pick up or haul. Request a free estimate and we will recommend the right material and amount for your beds.
