Crepe Myrtle Pruning and Care in Shreveport
Crepe myrtles (also spelled crape myrtles) are one of the most loved trees in Louisiana, and pruning them well is one of our specialties. Here is what we know about keeping them healthy and full of blooms.
The best time is late January through early March, while the tree is dormant. Pruning earlier, in the fall, is too soon.
Most crepe myrtles need only occasional pruning. When one does, we thin crowded stems from the inside of the canopy and remove dead or crossing branches, which keeps the tree’s natural shape and supports good blooms.
Cutting the tops off a crepe myrtle, sometimes called “crape murder,” shortens the life of the tree and destroys its natural beauty. It is not the right way to control size.
You cannot reshape a crepe myrtle by cutting it back, so the right variety matters. If you want a smaller tree, plant one that stays small. We help you choose when we plant new ones.
For the best summer blooms, plant crepe myrtles where they get at least eight hours of direct sun a day.
