Flower Bed Weed Prevention: Tilling, Immediate Action

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basic tips on preventing weeds that may be trying to infiltrate your flower beds. While there are a few methods for killing such weeds after they appear, these are often temporary at best – the ideal method here is to not allow them in to begin with.

At Lawn Care Experts, we’re happy to help with weed prevention and control in any area of your landscape, from lawn care themes to flower beds, shrubs, free-standing plants and any other area of your garden. What are some other general tips we offer when it comes to stopping weed growth from taking place in flower beds this spring or summer, plus how should you respond if weeds are located here? Let’s go over these elements plus a quick word on how our team of professional landscapers will assist you.

Limited Tilling

For larger flower bed areas, some tilling or overturning of the soil may be necessary every so often for plant health. This is often done to allow seeds proper sunlight and water, but it must be managed in terms of weeds.

Specifically, there are weed seeds in virtually any dirt present on your landscape. However, only those that reach a point an inch or two below the surface will receive enough light to germinate and grow into actual weeds – and overturning the soil regularly brings these new seeds to the surface more often. When you do need to perform some tilling or related digging of any kind, immediately cover any disturbed area with mulch patches to ensure weed growth isn’t stimulated.

Immediate Attention

Even with your very best prevention efforts, it’s possible some weeds may grow into your flower beds – weeds are extraordinarily resilient, and will live through many prevention efforts. If this happens to you, your top removal tool is immediate action.

This is because young weeds are much easier to get rid of. They have shallower root systems that can often easily be pinched from the soil – but when they grow larger, their root systems are extensive and require actual digging. Another tool: Any recent rainstorm, which makes it a bit simpler to pull out weed roots. In other cases, you might consider a weed killer or herbicide product.
